Red Rocks Amphitheater

Red Rocks Amphitheater, 9am, Morrison, CO, 6/23/2011.

Red Rocks is an exercise and music mecca considered my musicians to be one of the greatest venues in the US.

Since I’ve been here, I have only been here for four shows (I think); Rush, Mark Knopfler w/ William Topley, Rush (again), and Big Head Todd & the Monsters. The acoustics are good, the ambiance is unparalleled. Many musicians in fact have recorded their live performances for CD and DVD release including: U2, The Dave Matthews Band, John Denver, The Moody Blues, and Incubus, to name a few. Geddy Lee of Rush said, “It’s an amazing location. One of the most beautiful concert venues in America…or anywhere. I would hazard a guess that it’s one of the most beautiful anywhere.” I certainly agree with that.

Though its hard to show up there on a day when there are hardly any people around, its a peaceful place where one might go to just be.

Them Crooked Vultures

Them Crooked Vultures.

These guys are an all-star team of rockers. John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin built this who’s who with David Grohl (formerly of Nirvana, Foo Fighters), and Joshua Homme (formerly of Queens of the Stone Age).

I’m not not a huge fan of Queens, though admittedly, I don’t know them well, Josh Homme’s voice is as the child of Layne Staley of Alice in Chains and David Bowie; his even-flow transitioning and edginess stands out here unlike in his previous work. David Grohl’s eclectic style is a great match for the music they’re playing; I have to say that I haven’t noted anything special from John Paul Jones yet, but I also have yet to listen to this self-titled album on quality speakers. I’m lovin’ it!

Check them out!

RoastedRoot

So, though my peer group will probably get the reference right away, I think the title of my blog should be explained, as well, those who get this ever so witty reference, probably don’t get the full double entendre that lay in your midst like a poetic jungle cat waiting to pounce on your mental carcass. I digress…

So, the title…Okay, the easy part – Rusted Root is a world music band haling from the Pittsburgh area who recorded the overplayed tune, “Send Me On My Way”. Some of you may remember this song from the movie, “Ice Age” – unfortunately, its a type casting song which keeps people from going deeper with a truly talented and creative band.

The second part of the double entendre refers to, obviously, the transformation of the bands name “Rusted” to my sites name “Roasted”. There is a dish that I prepare which never fails to be a hit with whatever crowd I make it for. In a future post I will have pictures and a more in depth look at the dish. The dish consists of diced ROOT vegetables which I ROAST in the oven…hence…Roasted Root, see how clever that is? Sometimes I have good moments. If you come visit me though, I will be sure you get a taste of this down home masterpiece…..its so good, I think I’ll start prepping it right now…

Music is life!

I’ve always been a lover of music; as with many of us, I look back at my adolescence and wonder, “What the hell was I listening to?” The sappy, R&B of the 80’s, the 2 dimensional stylings of bands that in retrospect have no depth or character…yet, there was still something about it that appealed to me. My lack of life experience, at the time of this music, had me rewinding and replaying it as though it was the end all, be all of awesomeness. Woohoo!

At this point, I think I’ll through some names out there and leave it all open for discussion: Bad Company, Foreigner, .38 Special, Boys 2 Men.

There is really nothing to defend though, I realize now, that when I now listen to these songs, it takes me back to a much simpler time in my life…before children and bills. My life consisted of daydreaming about trucks, girls, sports, etc; no wonder, right? No wonder why; my thoughts were as shallow as my musical taste. I guess that’s why they say, “Art imitates life.”

I wonder who stands out in your mind, that gives you those nostalgic feelings. Who? Why?
